Murphy-Harpst and Community Partners Beautify Campus at PaintFest

Art has a unique power to inspire, build community, and offer new ways to express oneself. This summer, that power was on full display as the Murphy-Harpst campus was alive with color and creativity during our PaintFest event on July 11th. In a wonderful partnership, the Foundation for Hospital Art and dedicated volunteers from Bank of America joined our youth and staff for a day of painting, connection, and fun.

To make the event possible, our recreation center was transformed into a vibrant art studio. With music filling the air, more than 40 Murphy-Harpst youth and staff members came together to share in this creative experience. The talented team from the Foundation for Hospital Art, including their staff and interns, organized the entire day, providing all the necessary supplies, art instruction, and encouragement. Volunteers from Bank of America worked alongside our youth, helping with setup and painting, forging connections that are essential to our community.

The event was filled with moments of discovery. In one instance, two teenage boys arrived, convinced that “painting is not my thing.” They had never tried it before and were much more interested in playing basketball. However, with some gentle encouragement from volunteers and staff, they decided to give it a try. They soon discovered a new joy in painting and even recognized how the discipline and fine motor skills used in art could benefit them on the basketball court.

This story is a perfect example of what the day was all about: introducing our youth to new experiences and connecting them with friends in the community. Through this shared effort, they were not only able to have fun but also actively participate in beautifying their own living spaces. All of the incredible, colorful artwork completed during PaintFest will be hung in key locations across our campus for everyone to enjoy.

The day of creativity was capped off with a classic summer cookout, as everyone enjoyed hamburgers and hot dogs together.

PaintFest was more than just an art event; it was a powerful community engagement that allowed our youth to express themselves, build relationships, and see the beauty they can create in the world. It was a tangible reminder to each young person that they are safe, they are known, and they are loved.
